6 struck, 2 in private hands — the 1937 Edward VIII gold sovereign is an unissued proof pattern struck before the December 1936 abdication; Baldwin's sold one for £516,000 all-in in May 2014.
History
- Edward VIII reigned 326 days and abdicated on 10 December 1936; striking of his coinage had been scheduled to begin on 1 January 1937. (Wikipedia, Edward VIII coins, accessed 2026-09-16)
- Six proof sovereigns were struck; four are in museums and institutions and two are in private hands. (Wikipedia, Edward VIII coins, accessed 2026-09-16)
- Surviving pieces were kept out of the museum collection for decades — locked in the Deputy Master’s safe — and only entered the Royal Mint Museum collection in the 1970s. (History Hit / Royal Mint Museum, accessed 2026-09-16)
- Baldwin’s sold a proof example from the Hemisphere Collection for £430,000 hammer (£516,000 incl. 20% fee) in May 2014, a record for a British coin at the time; the Royal Mint privately sold another for £1M in January 2020 — the first £1M British coin. (CoinWorld; Numismag, accessed 2026-09-16)
- The obverse shows Edward’s bare head facing left with HP initials for Thomas Humphrey Paget — Edward insisted on his left profile, breaking centuries of alternating portrait direction. (Baldwin’s, via NumisBids; Noonans, via Numismatic News, accessed 2026-09-16)

Collector notes
- KEY DIAGNOSTIC MARKERS: obverse must show an uncrowned bare head facing LEFT (same direction as George V) with ‘HP’ initials below the neck truncation and the legend EDWARDVS VIII D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP. — a George V sovereign reads GEORGIVS V instead, and no circulating sovereign of any later reign reads EDWARDVS VIII or is dated 1937. Reverse: Pistrucci’s St George slaying the dragon with ‘B.P.’ initials upper right and the date 1937 in exergue; finely milled edge. (Baldwin’s, via NumisBids)
- Only six exist — any ‘1937 Edward VIII sovereign’ offered outside the known institutional/private specimens should be treated with extreme skepticism. (Wikipedia, Edward VIII coins; Numismag)
- CORRECTION to the brief: the landmark 2021 sale was Heritage’s $2.28M March 2021 Paramount Collection sale of the Edward VIII 5-POUND pattern (NGC PF 67 UCAM), not a Baldwin’s sovereign sale; Baldwin’s sovereign record was the May 2014 £516,000 sale. (NGC; CoinWorld)
- Genuine patterns were struck to proof standard with frosted cameo devices; the Baldwin’s specimen weighed 8.04 g vs the 7.9881 g sovereign standard — weights can vary on patterns, so professional authentication is essential. (Baldwin’s, via NumisBids)
