Use the ring test only as a screen

The ring test is a legitimate fast filter — and nothing more. Treat it like the magnet: it can condemn, but it can never acquit.

The procedure

Balance the coin on a fingertip and tap it with another coin. Genuine silver pings with a clear, sustained ring. Base-metal fakes thud.

The limits

  • It takes practice to hear reliably — train your ear on known-genuine coins first.
  • Plated fakes can ring deceptively well.
  • It must never substitute for the scale.

One hard rule

Do not do this with valuable graded coins. Tapping a slabbed coin risks the holder and the grade — and the test tells you nothing a cert number cannot.

A photograph can inform a decision, but it cannot authenticate or certify a coin.
