A slab does not create value by itself. It can add trust, market access, and price clarity — but only if those benefits outweigh fees, shipping, insurance, time, and the risk of a lower grade.
The decision test
Submit when the difference between realistic certified value and realistic raw value is greater than twice the all-in grading cost.
Strong reasons to submit
- Authentication-risk coins such as key dates and gold.
- Coins where one grade point creates a meaningful market difference.
- Material that sells more safely and broadly in an established holder.
Weak reasons to submit
- To “find out what it is worth.”
- When the expected spread barely covers the fee.
- When a problem coin is unlikely to straight-grade and the market already prices that risk.
Service fees and turnaround times change. Check the grading company’s current terms before sending a coin.
