Certification adds trust and market access. It also adds fees, shipping, insurance, delay, and grade risk. Run the math before you submit.
The slab-or-not rule
The realistic certified-minus-raw spread should exceed twice the all-in grading cost. If the slab only adds $60 of value and grading costs $40 all-in, you are working for free.
Count the all-in cost honestly
- Grading tier fee
- Shipping both ways
- Insurance
- Any dealer or membership submission fees
Price the grade risk
You are not buying the grade you hope for — you are buying the grade you will probably get. If the coin comes back one grade lower than expected, does the deal still work? If not, sell it raw.
A photograph can inform a decision, but it cannot authenticate or certify a coin.
